Trauma affects us in ways that go beyond what’s visible—it shows up in our bodies, our emotions, and how we interact with the world. For me, that reality hit hard after a head injury while surfing. In the search for healing, I quickly realized that traditional medicine didn’t offer the full support I needed. That’s when I turned to Ayurveda and yoga—two ancient practices that became the foundation of my recovery. Today, I want to share how these practices helped me reconnect with myself and begin to heal, not just my body, but my entire life.
Understanding the Root of Imbalance with Ayurveda
Ayurveda isn’t just a set of remedies—it’s a mindset, a lifestyle, and a way to see the world. What I love most about Ayurveda is that it doesn’t just treat symptoms; it addresses the root cause of imbalance. After my injury, I found that trauma wasn’t just something emotional—it was stored in my body, causing digestive issues, headaches, and anxiety. Ayurveda guided me to understand how my mind and body were connected and helped me heal them both.
For me, a big part of the journey was learning to cool my body and calm my mind. This meant eating soft, moist foods and drinking soothing herbal teas—simple but powerful steps to reduce the stress and tension I felt. Ayurveda helped me discover what my body needed to heal from the inside out. It wasn’t just about managing the symptoms; it was about creating a lasting sense of balance.
Yoga: A Path to Reconnect and Restore
Yoga became my anchor. At first, the thought of moving my body felt daunting. But yoga isn’t just about flexibility; it’s about reconnecting with yourself—physically and mentally. I started slow, with restorative poses and breathwork to calm my nervous system. Over time, I built strength in both my body and my mind.
Yoga taught me how to listen to my body. Each pose was an invitation to release tension, to breathe deeply, and to let go of the past. The deeper I went into my practice, the more I realized that yoga wasn’t just a way to heal my body—it was a way to heal my soul.
Mindfulness: Grounding in the Present
Trauma often keeps us stuck in the past or anxiously anticipating the future. Mindfulness—the simple practice of being present—was the tool I needed to break free. It gave me the ability to pause, breathe, and let go of the endless cycle of worry.
Whether I was meditating by the ocean or simply focusing on my breath during a meal, mindfulness brought me back to the present moment. It was a lifeline when my mind felt overwhelmed by the weight of the past. And it continues to be an essential practice that reminds me: the present is where healing happens.
Why Holistic Healing Works
Ayurveda, yoga, and mindfulness don’t just complement each other—they work together to create a complete healing process. They helped me see that true healing isn’t about fixing something broken; it’s about restoring balance and harmony to every part of yourself. The pain of trauma doesn’t disappear overnight, but with the right practices, you can start to rebuild, one small step at a time.
